Chicago’s Cook County State Attorney Anita Alvarez conceded her bid for a third term on Tuesday, CNN reports.
Alvarez sought another term as State Attorney, but the aftereffects of the Laquan McDonald case soured her chances with voters.
Chicago Prosecutor Seeks Reelection Following Laquan McDonald Video Release
McDonald, a 17-year-old, was shot 16 times by Chicago cop Jason Van Dyke and killed in October 2014. In November 2015, the first video was released of the chilling incident. Van Dyke was eventually brought up on charges in McDonald’s death, a mere 400 days after the incident.
During her concession speech, Alvarez defended her legacy after being voted out of office.
“I have been criticized that I wasn’t a very good politician, and that’s probably right, and that’s probably why I stand before you tonight,” she said. “But I am very damn proud of the fact that I am a good prosecutor, I have been.”
Alvarez was first elected in 2008, making her the first Latina win the Democratic nomination for the position.
Her potential successor, Kim Foxx, was voted upon by the public as the Democratic nominee will face Republican candidate Christopher E. K. Pfannkuche during the general election.
