During a celebration at the White House during International Jazz Day, music legends paid tribute to Prince, who the world lost late last month. Herbie Hancock explained that the original agenda was changed to honor the late icon and his contribution to music, stating,

“Last week, we lost a legend, an icon. The son of a jazz pianist whose music inspired a new generation of artists to create without boundaries. Courageous, playful, wise, brilliant, and a feast for the eyes and the ears, Prince epitomized the word music. Tonight we celebrate his incredible virtuosity and pay tribute to [a] legacy that spans every musical genre.”

Among the musicians paying tribute to the icon was Aretha Franklin, who did a beautiful cover of “Purple Rain.” This isn’t the first time the soul singer has honored Prince’s memory. In an interview shortly after his death Franklin said of the late legend, “He was definitely an original and a one-of-a-kind. There was truly only one Prince. Prince is gone but his music lives on.”
