Figuring out what to do with our hair can certainly be a challenge some days. Whether you’re tired of the same-old, same-old or you’re itching to make a drastic change, what’s a girl to do when she needs a fresh start? We sat down with Pantene ambassador and celeb stylist Kim Kimble, who has worked her mane magic on Beyonce, Rihanna, and Mary J. to name a few, to get some tips on how to create a winning hair regimen in four easy steps.
Consult your stylist. Having a professional on your glam squad will ease some of the anxiety you may have about finding new products and trying a new look. “A good stylist is a must. She can help you,” says Kimble. “A haircare specialist’s job is to help you connect the dots. This is what the consumer needs, this is how the products work, now let’s marry these together and create a successful hairstyle.” Word of mouth is a great way to find a new stylist, so start with people you know— your coworkers, girlfriends, church family or sorority sisters—and go from there.
Do your research. The internet offers a wide array of styling solutions that you can use to start your search for a new style. “See what the bloggers or the websites are saying. Look online and see if there’s anything that catches your eye.” If you’re overwhelmed by the listings in your Google search results, you can also try scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, where the hairstyle inspiration abounds. Type in a hashtag—”protective styles,” “marley twists,” “ombre” for example— and you’re sure to be well on your way to finding something you love.
Speak up. You’ve heard the phrase “If you see something, say something” used in airports and subway train stations. Well, according to Kimble, the same goes for your hair! “If you see a girl with the hair that you want, ask her where she gets her hair done,” advises Kimble. If you’re worried about breaking the ice with a total stranger, start with a compliment (“Excuse me, I love that updo on you!”) before going in for the ask (“Do you mind me asking where you get your hair done?”). Works like a charm.
Find the right products. If you’re overwhelmed when you walk into the haircare aisle at the drugstrore, take a deep breath. When shopping for products, focus on purchasing just a few basic items for your unique hair type and texture. “A lot of brands are coming out with lines that are more specific to your needs which makes it easier for the consumer,” says Kimble. “I love Pantene’s Truly Natural and Truly Relaxed products. Each line has specific products for relaxed and natural hair because the two are so unique. Also, there are notes right on the bottle that help you use the product effectively.”
