From the super-chic shades to the cheeky names (hello, ‘Blowing Money Fast!’), there’s nothing we don’t love about Ginger + Liz Nail Lacquer. But don’t just take our word for it — the trendy polishes, owned by two fierce nailistas, H. Ginger Johnson and S. Liz Pickett, have garnered a cult following among celebs like Selita Ebanks, Kelly Rowland and Queen Latifah.
Here, we caught up with Ginger and Liz to hear about their favorite spring 2011 nail trends and their glam company…
ESSENCE.COM: How was Ginger + Liz started?
G+L: We formed an unbreakable bond when we discovered that we both have an addiction to nail lacquer! And we’re both health conscious, so it was only natural to develop nail lacquer that’s both non-toxic and vegan friendly.
ESSENCE.COM: Which nail trends are you loving for spring?
G+L: We loved the bright blues, purples, corals and yellows, but we’re also loving pastel metallics… they have a playful, yet sophisticated finish. Nail designs will still be popular with risk-takers this season.
ESSENCE.COM: What news colors does Ginger + Liz have for spring?
G+L: We’re really excited about four new shades: Prima Donna is a crisp pink metallic shade with lavender undertones, I’m So Over Him is a bright African violet, Brown Sugar is a creamy cocoa, and Welcome to My Jungle is a mossy green metallic.
ESSENCE.COM: How should we take care of our nails at home?
G+L: Your nails depend on sufficient supplies of protein, minerals and vitamins to stay healthy, so eat protein-rich foods to help develop stronger nails. When filing your nails, choose a shape closest to your natural form… some of us have square nails, while others have nails that grow in a more rounded fashion.
ESSENCE.COM: What colors look best on brown skin?
G+L: Over the past year we’ve noticed that taupes, rose-golds, dove grays, and bright pinky-reds look gorgeous on African American women of all complexions.
