It’s bad enough that the Black community is still fighting for equal rights in 2016 as police officers continue to gun down people of color for no other reason than having melanin in their skin. But the police’s view on Black men is spreading, and little Black boys are paying for it.
An Atlanta store clerk was charged yesterday after being arrested for locking 11-year-old Dylan Curate inside his establishment and holding him at gunpoint. The clerk, who’s been identified as Abhishek Dubey, told police he thought Curate was stealing. According to WSB-TV 2 Atlanta, the incident took place around 1:30 am Saturday morning. After hearing Dubey’s accusations, investigators reviewed the surveillance tape and saw no evidence of Dylan stealing anything.
A co-worker came to the defense of Abhishek Dubey saying, “they had issues with robberies and kids stealing,” WSB-TV reports. But at the end of the day, that’s no excuse for profiling a child and holding him captive at gunpoint.
“He was literally kidnapped because that door was locked,” Nicole Borden, DeKalb County chapter member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, told WSB-TV. “His siblings were trying to get to him. That is very, very terrifying.”
Reports say Dubey’s gun was real, but didn’t have any bullets. The store clerk is currently being charged with aggravated assault.
