The Baltimore Ravens have cut running back Ray Rice following newly-released video footage of him punching his then-fiancee Janay Palmer in an elevator at Revel Hotel Casino in Atlantic City. TMZ released video of the elevator incident earlier today, saying it altered the footage to “smooth out” the “jumpy, raw video.”
Shortly after the Ravens’ decision, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the Rutgers University alum will be suspended from the league, indefinitely.
In the video, Rice and Palmer can be seen pushing each other before Rice punches Palmer in the face, leaving her unconscious body on the floor of the elevator and then dragging her out into the lobby.
Rice apologized for the incident in July, calling it the “biggest mistake” of his life. The NFL supspended him for two games—he was meant to play his first game of the season this month. Criticism of the punishment led the NFL to introduce new penalties for domestic violence. First-time offenders now face a six-game suspension from the league.
Rice now becomes a free agent.
