Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. is calling for a boycott of Waffle House until the restaurant chain implements training for its employees on racism.
“Family, let’s stay out of Waffle House until the corporate office legitimately and seriously commits to 1. discussion on racism, 2. employee training and 3. other plans to change; and until they start to implement changes,” she tweeted.
Her call comes after two recent race and police-related incidents that involved the restaurant went viral. On Saturday, 22-year-old Anthony Wall was choked and slammed on the ground by police after getting into an argument with employees at a North Carolina Waffle House. He had just taken his 16-year-old sister to prom earlier in the night, according to ABC 11.
Last month, Chikesia Clemons was manhandled by police officers after an employee of an Alabama Waffle House called the police on her for asking to speak with management.
During the disturbing incident, Clemons was wrestled to the ground by police — a move which exposed her breasts. When she asked officers, “What are you doing?” one of the men responded, “I’ll break your arm, that’s what I’m about to do.“
The restaurant chain defended its employee actions, calling them “appropriate.”
“Ms. Clemons was violated by police,” King tweeted. “Her breasts were exposed. It barely garnered national attention. Do #BlackLivesMatter? Do #BlackWomenMatter?”
