The production will be directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and is written by Gordy himself. The play will feature popular songs by Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, the Jackson Five and Michael Jackson. Collectively, Motown has earned a whopping 180 number one singles around the globe.
Motown is set to recount Gordy’s story from being a young songwriter in 1959 in Detroit through the present time. “Broadway is the pinnacle of live theater and provides a challenging and exciting opportunity to tell my story and share the magic of Motown,” said Gordy.
Gordy isn’t the only legendary figure headed to Broadway. Mike Tyson and Spike Lee recently joined forces to bring Undisputed Truth to the circuit this July. In addition, the long running and wildly popular show Fela! is set to return this summer as well. Not to mention there’s chatter that Sparkle could be heading to Broadway shortly after the film debuts in theaters this August.
