Flanked by a dozen Black men, Beyonce closed Sunday night’s Grammys with a heartfelt rendition of “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.”
Though the powerful performance didn’t need an explanation, Bey has released a mini-documentary explaining why she chose that setting and those men to accompany her on stage.
“I wanted to find real men that have lived, have struggled, cried, have a light and a spirit about them,” she said in the eight-minute video. “I felt like this is an opportunity to show the strength and vulnerability in Black men.”
The filmmakers also took time to speak with the men who were involved in the project.
“I feel like being a part of this is showing Black men in a positive light and showing that we are members of society,” one of the men said. “We have value. Our lives have meaning.”
