According to police reports, Richards was demonstrating at a Black Lives Matter event when police approached a nearby woman who had been accused of leaving a restaurant without paying. While police were accosting the woman, officials say that Richards attempted to pull her away from their grasp. However, bystander video shows Richards simply standing by the scene.

Richards was arrested and charged with lynching, defined by California law as “the taking by means of a riot of another person from the lawful custody of a police officer,” as well as delaying and obstructing peace officers, inciting a riot and child endangerment. She was sentenced to 90 days in jail.
Richards is the first African-American to be convicted for lynching.
