Boyz II Men member Michael McCary sat down with Iyanla Vanzant and his former band members to talk about the issues he’s faced since leaving the group and revealed the devastating reason he left in the first place.
“I have MS,” he told Vanzant, “It sent me into, like, a depression.” The singer shared that symptoms of the disease first surfaced while he was in the band and in his early twenties, it began to worsen: “It was like little back spasms at first, and then they would get stronger and stronger. So each time it would get more harsh. Once I was about 22, it started going to full scale.”
McCary added that visits to the doctor left him incredibly anxious and worried about his health; he was warned he could become paralyzed. “They were saying that I have a nerve around the sciatica that was locked in place that could sever if I stepped wrong,” he said.

With the help of Vanzant, McCary revealed to the rest of Boyz II Men his battle with Multiple Sclerosis and his feelings about how their relationship changed after his health declined, noting that keeping it a secret for so long was a large part of the issue. Through Iyana’s House of Healing, McCary seems ready to move on to a stronger and better relationship with his former band members.
