CBS is gearing up to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the multimedia initiative will be streamed on CBSNews.com and will feature a panel discussion moderated by Bob Schieffer who reported on the movement years ago.
Whoopi Goldberg, Harry Belafonte, Jason Collins and Rosie Perez will be among the speakers on the panel that will explore the violent summer of 1964 when three Civil Rights workers were murdered in Mississippi. The panel will also tackle current hot topics including marriage equality and gay rights.
Scheiffer says of the event, “It’s a celebration of how far have we come and recognition of far we still have to go. I must say of all the things I’ve done at CBS over the years I can’t think of anything I’ve felt more honored to be a part of.”
CBS News: 50 Years Later, Civil Rights will air live on CBSNews.com and the Smithsonian Channel July 24 at 8 p.m.
