The man, Quintonio LeGrier, was wielding an aluminum baseball bat and acting erratically which prompted his father to call the police.
According to family, LeGrier had been struggling with mental health issues since going off to college and his father was hoping authorities would offer help to the teen.
“We’re thinking the police are going to service us, take him to the hospital,” his mother Janet Cooksey said. “They took his life.”
“You call the police, you try to get help and you lose a loved one,” she added. “What are they trained for? Just to kill? I thought that we were supposed to get service and protection. I mean, my son was an honor student. He’s here for Christmas break, and now I’ve lost him.”
Bettie Jones, the other victim in the incident, was a neighbor who was watching for the police to arrive on the scene. She was accidentally hit by police fire during the incident.
“The 55-year-old female victim was accidentally struck and tragically killed,” a statement from the police read. “The department extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”
