The Chicago police officer who senselessly gunned down 22-year-old Rekia Boyd in 2012 has resigned, reports CNN.
Detective Dante Servin approached Rekia and a group of others as they walked in a park close to her home, where he reprimanded them for “talking too loudly.” Servin was in plain clothes and did not identify himself as a police officer. After an exchange of words, the group turned to leave the scene and Servin fired several shots. One of the bullets struck Rekia in the head, killing her.
Agency: Officer Who Fatally Shot Rekia Boyd Should Be Fired
Servin was later acquitted of involuntary manslaughter charges in April of 2015, but has continued to face significant backlash from most who feel that he should have been fired at least and imprisoned at best. In November of 2015, Chicago mayor Rahm Emmanuel called for Servin’s firing, which many believed prompted the now-former officer to resign. Servin was scheduled to meet with the Chicago police board on Thursday to hear their final decision in the case of “civilian-led” termination charges filed against him, at which time it was highly speculated that he would have been fired.
Police Officer Found Not Guilty in Death of Rekia Boyd
In an appearance on NewsOne Now with Roland Martin earlier today, Rekia’s brother Martinez Sutton vowed this wasn’t the end of road and that they would target Sevins pension. “If they don’t give it to us, we going to have to take it some other waym” he said.
