Plus: NAACP Image Awards announce presenters, Kanye West debuts a new video, Rev Run and Tyrese have a talk show in the works, Missy Elliot may appear on the Super Bowl halftime stage, and more!
Happy Friday! We’ve got some surprises and rumors to go with your coffee this morning.
Comedian Eddie Murphy will make a triumphant return to Saturday Night Live for the show’s 40th anniversary special. This will be the first time Murphy has appeared on the show since 1984. “It’s just timing. It never worked out where the timing was right for me to do it,” Murphy told TV One’s Roland S. Martin. “Actually, they are having a 40th anniversary, I think, in two weeks. I’m going to that. That will be the first time I have been back since I left.” Murphy got his start on SNL and is often credited with keeping the sketch comedy show alive in the 80’s. [TV One]
Super Bowl watchers may be in for a surprise during Sunday’s halftime show. The rumor mill is saying that Missy Elliot is slated to make an appearance with headliner Katy Perry. “When you hear the first ring go the chord, I think jaws will drop and faces will melt,” she said. Elliot is featured on Perry’s remix to “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” so keep your fingers crossed that she’ll make it to the Super Bowl stage! [Access Hollywood]
And the rumor mill keeps on turning. Word on the street is that Rev Run and Tyrese Gibson will host their own talk show. “There’s a new talk show coming! It’s one single man and one dedicated married man. Two different perspectives. One talk show. Should be VERY interesting,” Rev Run wrote in his Instagram. Very interesting indeed. The pair co-wrote a New York Times bestseller, Manology: Secrets of your Man’s Mind Revealed, and it seems like the show will follow the same flow. Will you be watching? [Hello Beautiful]
We’ve got a serious case of the feels. Kanye West stopped by Ellen yesterday and gave us a sneak peek of the music video for his touching new song, “Only One,” celebrating North West and mourning his late mother. The low-key video shows he and Nori traipsing through a field in the rain as the track serenades the daddy and daughter. Kanye, we didn’t know you had it in you! [Ellentube]
The NAACP Image Awards is shaping up to be a hot evening. The NAACP just announced its full list of presenters, which include Common, Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Kerry Washington and Oprah. Gabrielle Union, Octavia Spencer, Taraji P. Henson, Tessa Thompson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Uzo Aduba are also scheduled to make appearances. Oh, and we can’t forget about our eye candy for the evening: Shemar Moore and Omar Epps. [The Source]
Super news! Mechad Brooks of True Blood and The Game fame is set to co-star in Supergirl, a CBS pilot based on characters from DC comics. Brooks will play James Olsen, a photographer harboring a secret who works in the same building as “Supergirl.” No word yet on when the pilot will air. [Deadline]
