- First Lady Michelle Obama wrote an open letter to the Newtown, Connecticut community in light of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that left 26 people dead last week. In the letter, which was published in the Hartford Courant, the First Lady said she is proud of the outpouring love and support that has come from every corner of America. “As a mother of two young daughters, my heart aches for you and your families. - Former South African president Nelson Mandela is on the mend, says current president Jacob Zuma. The anti-apartheid icon has been in hospital for two weeks after being diagnosed with a lung infection and undergoing gallstone surgery. “His condition was serious but he is responding well to treatment and he steadily improved over the last few days,” said Zuma. He added that Mandela is receiving the best possible care and that he has met all of his health challenges with “tremendous fortitude and grace.” [The Grio]

- Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Williams and Condola Rashad are heading back to Broadway! They join leading lady Cicely Tyson and director Michael Wilson in a revival of The Trip to Bountiful which will include an all African-American cast.
