Oprah began her eight-city tour of “Oprah’s The Life You Want Weekend” in Atlanta this past weekend. Winfrey brought inspiration to a full crowd, alongside guests such as Deepak Chopra, Iyanla Vanzant, Elizabeth Gilbert and pastor Rob Bell. The self-help seminar includes talks about finding one’s life purpose and provides attendees with exercises to take action to help them reach their goals. Up next, the tour will hit Auburn Hill, Michigan, Washington, D.C., Newark, Houston, Miami, Seattle, and ends in San Jose on November 15. [BlackAmericaWeb]
Atlanta Hawks’ co-owner Bruce Levenson is looking to sell his controlling interest in the team after releasing a racially-charged email he sent back in 2012. The intent of the email was to work on ways “to bridge Atlanta’s racial sports divide.” But the email included Levenson saying that that the Hawks’ Black fans may be keeping the White fans away. Levenson voluntarily turned the email into the NBA, which led to his decision to sell his interest. [HuffingtonPost]
During a concert last week, Kanye West revealed that he will be releasing his first shoe with Adidas called “The Yeezy III.” In a video clip from the show, Yeezy notes that the new shoe will coming in November, and that “this is just the beginning.” How long do you think they’ll last on the shelf before they sell out? Chris Rock debuted Top Five, his most personal movie yet, at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend to rave reviews. Rock stars in, and wrote and directed the film about a famous comedian trying to move into serious film roles (sound familiar?). The film also stars Rosario Dawson, Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan and more. [Deadline]
Phylicia Rashad, Bill Withers and Dr. Alvin Poussaint will be honored at this year’s Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) event. The Celebration of Leadership in Fine Arts will focus on these three icons’ work, which helped to convey a rich and diverse African-American experience. The celebration will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24 in Washington D.C.
Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is due to start his 10-year sentence today for his role in Hurricane Katrina corruption in 2005. Nagin will serve his time in a Texarkana, Texas federal facility. [Reuters]
The greatest-hits album of Bob Marley & The Wailers, Legend, will be on the Billboard 200 chart’s top 10, next week. The 1984 album has never been on the top 10 list, but will be after the Google Play store sold the album at a discounted price of 99 cents. The new top 10 will be released Wednesday, Sept. 10.
