First Lady Michelle Obama returned to Chicago yesterday to deliver the graduation speech at Martin Luther King, Jr. Preparatory High School—the school where slain teen Hadiya Pendleton would have graduated from this year. FLOTUS told students that Pendleton’s life was an inspiration to her own. An empty chair marked the place where Pendleton would have sat. The chair was “adorned with a lavender cloth, purple ribbon and fresh flowers.”

Cpl. David Eric Casebolt, the McKinney, Texas police officer who was filmed assaulting a 14-year-old girl and pulling his gun out on teens this past weekend, has resigned. Casebolt remains under investigation for the incident. He will keep his pension and benefits. [NY Times]
