First Lady Michelle Obama returned to Chicago yesterday to deliver the graduation speech at Martin Luther King, Jr. Preparatory High School—the school where slain teen Hadiya Pendleton would have graduated from this year. FLOTUS told students that Pendleton’s life was an inspiration to her own. An empty chair marked the place where Pendleton would have sat. The chair was “adorned with a lavender cloth, purple ribbon and fresh flowers.”
“I know that many of you are thinking about Hadiya right now and feeling the hole that she left in your hearts,” said Mrs. Obama. “But graduates, tonight, I want you to understand that every scar that you have is a reminder not just that you got hurt — but that you survived.” [Chicago Tribune]
