• Tyler Perry has been cast in the new Ben Affleck film, Gone Girl, based on the Gillian Flynn novel. Perry will play Tanner Bolt, the lawyer who will represent Affleck’s character after his wife, played by Rosamund Pike, disappears. Neil Patrick Harris will also star in the film. It’s the second major film for Perry in the last year. He most recently starred in 2012’s Alex Cross. [Deadline]
• Dr. Maya Angelou can add another major award to her trophy shelf. Angelou will be honored with Literarian Award by the National Book Foundation for her contributions to the literary community. The poet says she’s thrilled to be receiving the award and she’s anxious to be in the same room with “some very big names in the literary world.” [Grio]
• Lamar Odom is out of rehab. According to People, the NBA free agent checked into rehab for drug and substance abuse on Wednesday and checked himself out Thursday afternoon. It’s the latest update in a list of ongoing incidences that have allegedly plagued the star—including marital problems with Khloe Kardashian. Odom was arrested for DUI last week. [People]
• The Hollywood Reporter announced plans to honor Idris Elba and Naomie Harris during their inaugural Breakthrough In Film Awards. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 8th during the Toronto International Film Festival. Both Elba and Harris were selected for their inspiring film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. “The Hollywood Reporter Breakthrough in Film Awards highlights the incredible work of emerging talent,” said THR editorial director Janice Min. “We are thrilled to recognize Idris Elba and Naomie Harris for their roles in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, a film which tells one of the most important stories of our time.”
