We hope you enjoyed your holiday weekend. Are you ready to catch up on some hot topics?
Looks like everybody and their momma watched Lifetime’s Whitney Houston programming this weekend. Whitney brought in over 4.5 million viewers over the weekend, making it Lifetime’s most-watched TV broadcast since Flowers in the Attic. The two additional specials, Bobby Brown: Remembering Whitney and Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances, brought in an additional 7.3 million viewers, totalling 11.8 million viewers for the night. Angela Bassett’s directorial debut received mostly positive reactions from viewers, with stars like Kerry Washington and Elise Neal tweeting their praise of the film.
Bill Cosby received nothin’ but love this weekend in California. The 77-year-old comedian was met with only one protestor before his show in Turlock, Calif., and after his performance, he received a standing O. His warm reception didn’t deter the protestor, 51-year-old Suzette Sims, though. “Anytime a woman comes forward, they are vilified by the world,” she told a local news organization. “So I want to say to them, ‘I believe you.'” [The Modesto Bee]
Social media is in an uproar about the Seattle Seahawks, not because of their NFC Championship win on Sunday, but because of their questionable tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on Monday. The team tweeted a photo of QB Russell Wilson crying with an MLK quote beside it and the caption “We Shall Overcome #MLK.” They quickly deleted the photo after people called it offensive and misguided, and issued an apology. “We apologize for poor judgement shown in a tweet sent earlier. We did not intend to compare football to the civil rights legacy of Dr.King,” they tweeted later. [ESPN]
During an appearance on The Real, Christina Milian offered some words of wisdom to expecting mom, Tamera Mowry-Housley. “I just love having a daughter so congratulations. That’s going to be exciting. You’re going to have a beautiful baby,” Milian said. Milian has a daughter of her own and says that enjoying the moment is key. “Her and I are like best friends and that’s one thing that I love about her. Who knows with those teenage years, but I’m enjoying the moment right now.” [E! Online]
During the debut of his new show, The Nightly Show, Larry Wilmore put some celebs on the spot in a game called “Keep It 100.” New Jersey Senator Cory Booker had to admit whether or not he wanted to run for president of the United States. Talib Kweli also offered his thoughts on the relationship between hip-hop and violence. Check out the clip below:
