The Chicago Police Officer who shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times has been indicted on six counts of murder.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Officer Jason Van Dyke was formarlly charged with first degree murder along with one count of official misconduct.
DOJ Launches Civil Rights Probe into Chicago Police Department
In November, a judge ordered for dash-cam video to be released of the incident in which McDonald was shown moving away from the officer as he was fired upon.
Since the video’s release, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy resigned from his position and the Justice Department has launched a federal investigation into the incident.
In the midst of protests, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has taken full responsibility for the shooting on behalf of the Chicago Police Department.
