Coretta Scott King, the widow of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., passed away at the age of 78.
“I just loved and admired Coretta Scott King so, her kindness, her keen intelligence and determination to protect her family and preserve Dr. King’s legacy.
She wouldn’t take no for an answer and was the driving force in raising the money and awareness needed to build the King Center in Atlanta as a living memorial to the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And she too dedicated her life to non-violent social change, primarily to eradicating poverty and also to environmental issues, workers’ rights and the rights of gays and lesbians. She was bold and fearless in her convictions.
I will forever cherish the private time spent with Miss Coretta over the years. She was a confidant, a wise soul that I would open my heart and life to. She did the same with me. I loved how she loved Dr. King; how she adored her children and her sister, and that she had absolute trust in God and the goodness of life.
We bid farewell to a great woman, and a gentle warrior who embodied the spirit, tenacity and passion of our people. I bid farewell to a beloved friend.”
