Dave Chappelle took on hosting duties for this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live!—his first time ever on the show, and the first episode to air since Donald Trump was elected as President.
He did not disappoint. The comedian made sure to bring his sharp and insightful humor along with him for the show. He shared the spotlight with musical guests A Tribe Called Quest, who were the guest musical performers for the evening.
The former Chappelle Show host began his monologue by immediately addressing Trump’s win: “I didn’t know Donald Trump was going to win the election. I did suspect it. It seemed like Hillary was doing well in the polls, and yet, I know the Whites. You guys aren’t as full of surprises as you used to be.”
And, he was just warming up.
“We’ve actually elected an internet troll as our president,” he said.
The monologue was wide-ranging as he also touched on the post-election demonstrations around the country, gun violence, shootings that have plagued the nation this year, Harambe the gorilla, and Black Lives Matter. In his own Chappelle-esque way, he also weaved in jokes about Colin Kaepernick, ISIS, and Bradley Cooper. Chappelle quipped that he was staying in a Trump hotel, and took a second to imagine the meeting between President Obama and Trump.
His monologue concluded with an ode to the Obama presidency and some openness to what might come next under a Trump administration—just with one caveat for president elect Trump: “Obama did a good job. I think we’ll all miss him when he’s gone,” he said. “I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. And I’m going to give him a chance. And we the historically disenfranchised demand that he gives us one too.”
