Since debuting his lush collection of romantic gowns and dresses, Detroit native Kevan Hall has gone from strength to strength. A laundry list of celebs from Vanessa Williams to Taraji P. Henson to Tia Mowry (whose wedding gown he designed) have come calling, as have everyday fashionistas who love the easy elegance of his collection.
We caught up with the L.A. based designer when he visited Mark Ingram Atelier in New York City and talked about his latest success: a bridal collection.
Read on for more about the line from the designer himself…
ESSENCE.com: Describe the history of Kevan Hall Bridal?
KEVAN HALL: Kevan Hall White Label launched last October 2010 to rave reviews from the press and retailers. We have continued to refine our romantic red carpet-inspired collection by offering exceptional embroideries, exquisite details, flattering silhouettes and impeccable quality.
ESSENCE.com: Why did you decided to develop a Bridal Line?
HALL: I received many requests from celebrities and friends to design their wedding gowns so I decided to offer a complete collection for the modern bride. After designing Tia Mowry’s wedding gown, I was amazed at the public’s favorable response!
ESSENCE.com What can people expect from the Bridal collection?
HALL: Sophisticated designs that are at once glamorous with a restrained elegance. I always create gowns that fulfill the bride’s fantasy and her dream for that special day.
ESSENCE.com: Where do you look for design inspiration?
HALL: I love classic lines and often look back to vintage for inspiration and then give it a new modern sensibility.
ESSENCE.com What is your favorite style in the collection ?
HALL: I have many favorites but the simple siren gowns look lovely in any setting and are great for destination weddings.
ESSENCE.com: Who is you favorite designer?
HALL: I admire the work of Vionnet, the 1930’s designer who invented the bias cut. I had a chance to see the collection during bridal market and the collection is amazing.
ESSENCE.com: Do you think that bridal gowns are moving away from tradition and more into fashion-forward styles? If so, how do you feel about the change?
HALL: I think girls are becoming a bit more fashion conscious in their choices of wedding gowns. They are following the trends and also looking at actresses on the red carpet. Fewer want to look like ‘confections’. They are more interested in chic, sophisticated gowns that will stand the test of time.
