A new Detroit program wants to give every student the right to a college education.
The Detroit Promise Zone program launched last week, which will use both private and public funds to cover the cost of community college for every high school student.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re a high school senior preparing for college now or a second-grader whose college career is years away,” Mayor Mike Duggan said in a statement. “The Detroit Promise will be there to help make a college education a reality.”

In order to qualify, students must fill out a FAFSA form and are required to have attended a public high school for both their junior and senior years. The city funds will cover the difference between any scholarships or government aid that a student receives.
The city is working to expand the program to cover tuition costs at four-year state universities.
