Snapchat is facing backlash after the popular app launched a Bob Marley filter that allows users to have the reggae legend’s face mapped over their own.
The filter was released today April 20th, which is notoriously know as a stoner’s holiday. The timing has led some to give the company major side-eye with some going so far as to call it digital blackface.
In a statement to The Verge, Snapchat said:
“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements.”
At press time, Marley’s family has not issued a statement.
Celebrating Bob Marley is always a great idea, but when it appears that his legacy is being limited only to his locs and association with marijuana we can see why some may take offense. But the fact that Marley’s family, who actually knew him, is in support of this idea it makes you wonder if this is much ado about nothing.
The question remains: Are you offended by the filter?
