While most of us are moving forward with positive hopes for the New Year, on the first Monday of ever year family lawyers are gearing up for what is always their busiest work week. Today is unofficially known as “Divorce Day,” the day when the largest number of couples around the globe begin initiating separation and divorce procedures.
It’s hard to imagine that after the joy of the holiday season, so many people would want to start the new year off this way, but the stats don’t lie. Studies show that one in five couples start considering divorce or separation once the Christmas festivities come to an end. After all, who wants to break up underneath the mistletoe on Christmas Day? Although for years it was rumored that a whopping 50 percent of all marriages will end in divorce in America, thankfully that statistic has been debunked in more recent data. For many of these couples, a fresh start with love is their number one post-holiday season priority and the best way to start anew for the New Year.
But before you lose all faith in the institution of marriage on this Divorce Day, remember that the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day, is just around the corner and that starting over is often the best way to to find a love that’s truly for you. (Wink!)
