Dave Chappelle made an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman last night where he talked about his upcoming shows at Radio City Music Hall, and also, his now infamous decision to walk away from Chappelle’s Show and a $50 million deal with Comedy Central.
On his supposed disappearance following the deal, Chappelle explained that he’d only been in South Africa for two weeks, and never lived there, as many media outlets reports. “It was like living on the edge of perception and reality,” he said.
Letterman then asked whether he had any regrets about walking away from the $50 million at the height of his show’s popularity. “It’s very hard to go through something like this because no one’s done it before. So there’s not too many people that don’t think I’m crazy,” he said. “Of course I would like to have that money.
“Money is the fuel for choices. Money gives me choices. So it’s not nothing, it’s something. But it’s not the end all be all.”
He further joked that having money “might” make him a happier person.
“Sometimes I listen to a Jay Z record and I start feeling bad about some of the choices I’ve made,” he said. “This guy’s had more fun on two songs than I have in the last 11 years.”
