Dwayne Wade is one of several celebs who has come forward to assist families who suffered devastating loses during Hurricane Sandy. The Miami Heat baller donated $210,000, which is his entire salary from Fridayโs match against the New York Knicks, to hurricane relief efforts.
โI know a lot of people here,โ Wade said about New York City to USA Today. โKnowing the things they have been through, itโs just mind-boggling. Miami is a place that is affected by hurricanes all the time so I know how the community can be impacted.โ
Wadeโs charitable donation came shortly after he caught some serious backlash for posting what some considered an insensitive remark on his Twitter page in the hurricaneโs aftermath.
On the Friday following the storm, Wadeโs team flew into New Jerseyโs Newark Airport for their game against the Knicks. According to Wadeโs tweet, it took the team three hours to make what should have been a 30 minute drive from Newark to Manhattan due to severe traffic backups post-Sandy.
โ3 hour traffic just to get into the NY cityโฆ#CโmonMan,โ Wade tweeted, which was not received well by some of his 3.7 million Twitter followers.
After catching flack for his remark, Wade deleted the comment and replied, โ2 be clear โTraffic tweet was meant 2 sayโโฆ We shouldnโt B here 2 play a basketball game when theirs so many families obviously still R affected by #Sandy.โ
