An attorney for the 22-year-old white supremacist who took the lives of nine Black people during the horrific Charleston, South Carolina church shooting says Roof’s mother had a heart attack this week during trial.
According to Fox News, Amelia Cowles became so overwhelmed while listening to the opening statements of prosecutors describe how her son planned, plotted and executed the deadly attack last July that she collapsed. She was also heard apologizing multiple times during the trial’s beginning as family members helped her to her feet.

Members of the jury and those present in the court also saw photos of the Emmanuel AME Church crime scene. Victims’ family members and others in the court were seen dabbing away tears and comforting each other as a somber silence took over the room at the sight of the slain bodies lying in pools of blood on the church’s tile floor.
Roof faces 33 federal charges, including hate crimes and could possible face the death penalty for his unspeakable act of violence.
