Elaine Welteroth has been named editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue. Talk about a #BlackGirlMagic moment!
Welteroth, 29, who has served as the magazine’s Beauty and Health Director since October 2012, will replace the glossy’s founding editor Amy Astley as she exits to helm Architectural Digest (another Conde Nast Publication title).
This exciting promotion makes Welteroth the youngest person to be appointed to the title of editor-in-chief in Conde Nast history. She is also only the second African-American to ever hold the title in the company’s 107 year existance (the first being Keija Minor, who was appointed editor-in-chief of Brides in 2012). And lest you believe Welteroth isn’t ready for such a loafty postion, just check her resume.
Beyond writing dope cover stories, editing awe-inspiring features, and managing some of the industry’s top editors at Teen Vogue, Welteroth has also served stints at some of the publishing world’s top magazines. Before landing at Teen Vogue, the California-native was Senior Beauty Editor at Glamour, and prior to that held the title of Beauty and Style Editor at Ebony.
In addition, beauty buffs and fashionistas alike are already very familiar with Welteroth’s soaring career and amazing social media presence. With nearly 50k Instagram followers and droves of fans awaiting her every move on Snapchat, Welteroth completely embodies the energy and spirit that has made Teen Vogue such a success.
Joining Welteroth in continuing that remarkable success is Marie Suter, who is Teen Vogue‘s creative director, and Phillip Picardi, 25, who is TeenVogue.com’s digital director. And, of course, the trio has been fully co-signed by Anna Wintour (aka Condé Nast artistic director and editor-in-chief of Vogue). She said the following in a press release:
Elaine, Marie and Phil are fearlessly at the forefront, inspiring young trendsetters with their sophisticated take on emerging fashion, beauty and pop culture, and they will lead Teen Vogue to the next phase of its success. This team has thoroughly embraced the endless potential of social media and new platforms, and their understanding of the most effective way to use them to connect with audiences, embodies what it means to be an editor today.
Agreed. We couldn’t be happier for Welteroth and wish her all the success in the world as she steps into this new and well-deserved role.
