Emerald Garner, daughter of Eric Garner, visited the memorial for the two NYPD officers who were killed on Saturday.
“I just had to come out and let their family know that we stand with them,” she told ABC News. “Everybody is coming together to mourn the death with the family as they did with my family. I just want to let the families know that my family stands with their family.”
Garner’s father was killed over the summer when an NYPD officer used an illegal chokehold on him. None of the officers involved were indicted on any criminal charges but Emerald Garner says that doesn’t stop her from showing her condolences for the fallen police officers.
“I don’t feel conflicted because I was never anti-police,” she said. “I have family that’s in the NYPD that I’ve grown up around…so my family is not anti police.”
Garner also doesn’t believe that the gunman’s actions against the NYPD reflect on the current protests and conversations about police brutality even though the gunman is believed to be avenging the killings of Eric Garner and Michael Brown.
“I feel like this was a mental health crisis, it didn’t have anything to do with race or anything. It was a mental health crisis,” she said.
