Just in time for Black History Month, Lil’ Wayne is reminding us of just how far we have to go. In a leaked song called “Karate Cop” by fellow rapper Future, Wayne’s verse includes the line: “Pop a lot of pain pills/ ‘Bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels/ Beat that p–sy up like Emmett Till.” Pause. Sigh. Wayne is of course referencing the brutal murder of Till, then 14, for allegedly whistling at a white woman in 1955.
Future’s label, Epic Records, has come out with an apology and says they’ll try to remove the song online “out of respect for the legacy of Emmett Till and his family and the support of the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.”
“To compare a woman’s anatomy — the gateway of life — to the ugly face of death, it just destroyed me,” said Till’s relative Airickca Gordon-Taylor to the Associated Press. “I had to call the elders in my family and explain to them before they heard it from some another source.”
To date, Wayne has not issued an apology.
