Flashback to last week: Protesters were marching in cities across the country expressing outrage at a grand jury’s decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for killing unarmed Black teen Michael Brown. Unreliable testimony from witnesses and contradicting forensic evidence led the grand jury to believe there was not enough evidence to pursue criminal charges.
After that grand jury decision, President Obama announced that he would be proposing a multi-million dollar fund to supply body cameras to police officers. His hope was that with more visual evidence of police interactions, there would be less instances of police brutality.
But here we are today after another grand jury decision not to indict another officer who killed another unarmed Black man, Eric Garner. There’s one difference: This time, the entire ordeal was captured on camera. Still, the grand jury felt there was not enough evidence to take Officer Daniel Pantaleo to trial.
This has us wondering: will body cameras on police officers really be the solution to police brutality? Take our poll and let us know in the comments how you think police brutality can end.
