Disneyland has become the happiest, and the most sickly, place on earth after an outbreak of the measles infected at least 70 children and adults, including five Disneyland employees. The contagious disease has since spread to six other surrounding states, and Mexico, proving that it is indeed a small world after all.
According to CNN, out of the children and adults who were infected, 82 percent weren’t vaccinated against the preventable, yet incredibly contagious disease which begs the question: why not?
Doctors recommend infants as young as 12 months receive the measels-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, though some parents delay vaccinations at such a young age and prefer to start later. Others opt out of vaccinating all together.
“Some people are just incredibly selfish by skipping shots,” Dr. James Cherry, pediatric disease expert at the University of California, Los Angeles, told Yahoo! News.
Meanwhile, Barbara Loe Fisher of the National Vaccine Information Center says it’s up to the parents to decide what’s best for their kids, not doctors. “I don’t think it’s wise or responsible to blame unvaccinated people for the outbreak,” she said. After all, there were those who were infected even though they’d received the vaccination.
How do you feel about vaccinating your kids?
