The grand jury decisions in Ferguson and New York City have sparked protests and anger across the country. But Black people aren’t the only ones reacting to the recent wave of police brutality.
Quite a few non-Blacks have stood in solidarity with protesters of color while they marched in the streets, held public demonstrations, and shared their emotions on social media. As a writer for Time Magazine put it, it seems like “white people are finally starting to get it” when it comes to racial injustice.
Even Eric Garner’s daughter, Erica Garner, has noticed the diversity in protesters and allies.
“For white people to come out and show how deeply they was hurt and like Asians and, you know, different people from different nations and different parts of the world to come out and show that they felt the same way I felt on that video,… It’s like a sense of I’m not the only one that feels this way,” she told CNN.
Meanwhile, white celebrities like Iggy Azalea and Eminem have been criticized for remaining silent about the recent issues. Rapper Azaelia Banks criticized Iggy Azalea for not saying anything after the Eric Garner grand jury decision.
“It’s funny to see people like Igloo Australia silent when these things happen,” Banks tweeted. “Black culture is cool, but Black issues sure aren’t, huh?”
