Yasmin Eleby was single, about to turn 40 and had no potential life partner in sight. So, she decided she would have the wedding of her dreams, by herself.
According to Madame Noire, Eleby, 10 bridesmaids and three ministers participated in an elaborate wedding ceremony at the Houston Museum of African American Culture. Eleby walked down the aisle, was given away and proceeded to a reception complete with music, cake and all of her family and friends.
Eleby says the ceremony was about making vows of love, forgiveness and honor to herself.
“I couldn’t imagine the ceremony being more poignant and meaningful,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “I want to encourage each of you to spread your wings and fly! You are not too old and it’s not too late to try something different.”
Social media has been buzzing about this unusual bride. Some find her decision to marry herself powerful and meaningful, while others think that her “marriage” was an act of desperation as she has yet to find a man who would actually marry her.
