A debate on bullying is taking place in Porterville, California due to the city’s mayor suggesting that children needed to “grow a pair” in response to a student-led anti-bullying effort.
City Councilwoman Virginia Gurrolla introduced the program to the City Council and asked them to support the students’ efforts to build safe zones off-campus for teens who are experiencing bullying after school. Mayor Cameron Hamilton responded: “I mean, I am against bullying, but I am getting damn tired of it being used as a mantra for everything that ills the world when all most people have to do is a grow a pair and stick up for them damn selves.”
Gurrola rebutted, “It is hard to stand up and maybe grow a pair when you are maybe a 10-year-old little girl.”
What do you think is the best way to handle a bully? Do you teach your child to defend themself, report it to the school and let them handle it. encourage your child to use their smarts and avoid getting physical? Let us know below.
