Eve recently stopped by New York’s Hot 97 radio station to discuss, among other things, her relationship with race car driver Maximillion Cooper, who is White. “I gotta say, it is weird for me that I’m with a white dude,” she told host Angie Martinez. “I look at him sometimes and I’m like, ‘You are so white.’ Seriously!”
Eve went on to explain how she and Maximillion have both had to learn about each other’s cultures. “I’m the first Black girl he’s ever been with, so we are learning,” she added. The rapper’s revelation was mostly met with glee from sisters on the blogosphere. “I’m glad she’s happy….regardless of who she’s with,” wrote one commenter. “If she’s happy and he treats her like a queen, that’s all that is important. No matter what his race is. I’m happy for her!” wrote another.
And yet when, say, Kanye West dates Kim Kardashian, the reaction from sisters is the complete opposite. Or how about when Idris Elba was supposedly dating a White woman? Sisters were not having that. Some were even hurt by the thought. “It makes us feel like we’re not good enough for a Black man of his caliber (and so many other men behave this way),” wrote one Clutch commenter.
Why do you think we react differently when a sister dates outside of her race, then when a brother does. Is there a double standard? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments below.
