The explosive episode of Iyanla: Fix My Life featuring a cranky and, some would say high, DMX is all anyone is talking about.
The hashtag #supportDMX quickly became a trending topic on Saturday night as we watched the rapper battle it out with Iyanla Vanzant as she tried to repair his relationship with his 20-year-old son, Xavier. DMX, though defensive, did admit to his long-term drug abuse and addiction to women. He seemed to be opening up until Xavier came into the picture. Clearly his children and family are a pain point because he amped up the aggression, becoming even more defensive and belligerent.
When Xavier asked his dad to come back into his life as a clean man, without the drugs, DMX responded by storming out of the session and yelling, “See you at my funeral.” Following the airing of the episode DMX’s rep Domenick Nati sent a statement to ESSENCE.com stating that “DMX agreed to be a guest on Iyanla: Fix My Life with the understanding that she would be helping his relationships with his ten children.”
“When he arrived for the taping, most of the content was focused on his struggles with drugs and poor parenting. Iyanla did not “fix” DMX’s life, just made his image worse, and does not have DMX’s personal written consent to use the footage.”
Last week we spoke with Vanzant and asked whether she felt she’d had a breakthrough with the Grammy-winning rapper. “Sometimes you go on to do one thing and something else unfolds,” she said. “What we discovered was that the greatest healing was for his son Xavier who had not had the ability to address what he was feeling about his father. Xavier really got the biggest breakthrough.”
The truth is we all have an opinion on DMX’s behavior and what he should do next. Is it our place to judge him? Probably not, but hey, he made his issues public. Vanzant encouraged viewers to support him on his journey because if not, “we could lose our brother,” she said.
