Jheryl Busby, former president and chief executive of Motown Records, was found dead in a hot tub at his home in Malibu, California, early Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. He was 59. Busby helped architect the careers of Johnny Gill, Boyz II Men and Queen Latifah. Los Angeles County Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter said: “It was a possible accident or else he died of natural causes.” Artist Smokey Robinson, saddened by Busby’s death, said, “I had tremendous respect for the way he continued the Motown legacy.” Busby was named Motown’s president and chief executive officer in 1988 and held the titles for seven years. He was also a major shareholder in the first Black-owned national bank in the United States, Founders National Bank of Los Angeles, along with Magic Johnson and Janet Jackson.
