Singer Gloria Estefan has opened up about why she turned down JAY-Z’s offer to perform during the Super Bowl LIV halftime show in 2020.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Estefan and her husband, musician Emilio Estefan, explained the situation.
“JAY-Z called me and said, ‘You know something? I’m coming to Miami,’ and Gloria said, ‘I’m not going to the Super Bowl. I don’t want to do it!'” Emilio explained.
“Come on—those high-stress things? That’s a high-stress thing. I’ve done them. I’ve done two,” Gloria added.
Gloria Estefan has performed during the Super Bowl twice, once in 1992 and again in 1999.
In 1992 the singer gave a winter wonderland–themed performance with figure skater Dorothy Hamill and Brian Boitano featured in the show.
In 1999 Estefan performed alongside dancer Savion Glover and Stevie Wonder and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
While Estefan won’t be appearing at Super Bowl LIV, she describes halftime performers Shakira and Jennifer Lopez as the “perfect people” for the show.
“I’m really thrilled for Shakira and J-Lo, who are going to be burning up the stage because those women are hot.”
Both Emilio and Gloria have ties to Shakira and Lopez. Emilio signed the former, while Gloria has written and cowritten songs with both women.
