Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy before a myriad of family and friends who gathered to say goodbye. Outside the steps of the Hall of Freedom at the cemetery Sharpton said, “People should not be judged by the mistakes they make, but how they rise above them. Rodney had risen above his mistakes. He never mocked anyone – not the police, not the justice system, not anyone. He became a symbol of forgiveness.”
King’s daughter Dene said during the service that she’s was proud of her father. “Still, today, I can be up here and be sad, but I could have lost you when I was six so I’m thankful and grateful… I’m grateful for all of you for coming to show your support.”
Earlier last week the family asked for donations to offset funeral costs. Their needs were met, largely by television producer and CSI creator, Anthony Zuiker, who donated $10K. “We lost a symbol, but they lost a loved one,” said Zuiker.
King was found dead at the bottom of his pool in Rialto, California on June 17. He was 47. His death is currently being investigated as a drowning, however authorities are awaiting a full toxicology report. In the day after his death it was discovered that King was drinking and smoking marijuana in the early hours of June 17.
His fiancée, Cynthia Kelly, did not attend yesterday’s homegoing service, reports TMZ.
