The family of
Botham Jean, the 26-year-old black man who was shot and killed by a Dallas police officer, is expected to file a federal lawsuit claiming use of excessive force in the case.
According to Attorney Lee Merritt, who is representing the Jean family, the lawsuit will name Amber Guyger, the now-former police officer in question, and the city of Dallas as defendants in the lawsuit,
the Associated Press reports. It is still not immediately clear when the lawsuit will be filed.
Guyger, who was
recently terminated from the Dallas Police Department, claimed she mistook Jean’s apartment for her home when she intruded into the young man’s space. She claimed
she shot at a ‘large silhouette’, which she mistook as an intruder, ultimately killing Jean.
Guyger is currently facing manslaughter charges for Jean’s death, and the incident is currently being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
