The family of a man killed by a University of Cincinnati police officer has just reached a settlement with the university totaling $5.3 million, reports Newsweek.
Samuel DuBose, a 43-year-old Black father, was fatally shot on July 19 while on his way home to watch a movie with his son. Officer Ray Tensing pulled DuBose over for reportedly driving without a front license plate. Body cam footage shows DuBose handing Tensing what appears to be a bottle of gin—though it was reportedly air freshener. DuBose then attempts to drive away, prompting Tensing to draw his gun and fire one shot, fatally striking DuBose in the head.
Cop Indicted for Murder in Fatal Shooting of Samuel DuBose
Yesterday, the University of Cincinnati released a statement saying that the university had reached a $4.85 million settlement with the family. Additionally, the university would pay for tuition for DuBose’s 12 children, totaling approximately $500,000.
“I want to again express on behalf of the University of Cincinnati community our deepest sadness and regrets at the heartbreaking loss of the life of Saumel DuBose,” university president Santa Ono said in a statement. “This agreement is also part of the healing process, not only for the family, but also for our university and Cincinnati communities.”
Less than two weeks after the shooting, Tensing turned himself into authorities and was charged with murder and voluntary manslaughter. He faces life in prison and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
