Although the song’s official title is “King Holiday,” it was the catchy chorus that always made us want to sing along. As we prepare to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we wanted to take you back to the time when we celebrated his birthday becoming a national holiday.
The year was 1986 and Dr. King’s youngest son, Dexter, assembled the King Dream Holiday Chorus and Holiday Crew to record this song to commemorate the nation’s observance of his late father’s birthday. The group of singers and rappers who participated in the project was a virtual who’s who of 80s music–think El DeBarge, Kurtis Blow, Whodini, New Edition, Run-DMC, Stacy Lattisaw, Menudo, Lisa Lisa and Full Force, the Fat Boys and a then up-and-coming singer by the name of Whitney Houston.
What a joyous time in our history!
