Not only have Flint residents not had clean water since 2014, but now Mayor Karen Weaver’s office issued a statement announcing that the city will no longer have trash service until further notice.
“Due to the circumstances, there will be no trash pick-up in the city starting this Monday, Aug. 1, 2016,” reads the statement. “Officials ask that residents not set their trash out at the curb.”
According to MLive, the announcement comes after the city’s contract with Republic Services expired on July 29th and the contract renewal was vetoed by Mayor Karen Weaver, who had proposed switching to Rizzo Environmental Services for a contract of $17.5 million.
“Council members had said they wanted to research the company and some members also question Rizzo’s ties to former Mayor Woodrow Stanly and potential ties the company may have in Canada,” reports MLive.
A vote of 8-1 against instating Rizzo to service the city’s trash pick up came back July 18th.
The disagreement has placed the city in a holding pattern regarding a contract ensuring trash pick up and is another example of the negligence of city officials. The result will have an impact on the residents of Flint, Michigan as MLive states that it is unclear as to when the service will be restored.
