Racial tensions between the African-American community and law enforcement are still sky high in Louisiana in the wake of a white police officer gunning down 37-year-old Black father Alton Sterling in early July, but former Klu Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke somehow thinks it’s a great time to run for state Senator.
The ex-KKK leader took to his website on Friday to announce plans to run for U.S. Senate in Louisiana, just one day after Donald Trump officially accepted the GOP nomination for president with a bizarre and lengthy speech at the RNC on Thursday evening. Although no longer a KKK leader, Duke still publicly asserts his position as a proud white supremacist and is also a former Louisiana state representative. According to Politico, he ran for governor of Louisiana in 1991 and claimed that he’s been urged to run for Congress by many people in his district in his announcement on Friday. “With the country coming apart at the seams and no one willing to really speak the truth about what is happening, the majority population in this country needs someone who will actually give voice to their interests in the face of an increasingly violent hatefest launched by the media and political establishment against them,” the website announcement reads.
Hopefully legislators and voters in our country will know better than to allow a professed racist and convicted felon to land a seat in Congress but given the current political environment, you really just never know.
