Gabourey Sidibe plays a bully in the recently released independent film Yelling to the Sky. Thus far in her career she’s become known for playing the rough, tough and troubled characters. But the actress says don’t count her out just yet. She’s got more up her sleeve and she’s ready to dazzle the world.
Sidibe told ESSENCE.com in an exclusive interview that she never wants to “get boxed into the sad, little abused girl” characters and that her dream role is the complete opposite.
“I really like musicals. I would love to do a musical one day,” she said, after revealing she enjoys singing.
It seems Sidibe, who plays Andrea Jackson on The Big C, is looking to follow in her mother’s musical footsteps. Her mom, Alice Tan Ridley, who has been singing in subway platforms in New York City for years, was a recent contestant on the fifth season of America’s Got Talent.
“She sings really great. She’s touring. Everytime I talk to her she’s like, ‘I just got back from Vegas or I just got back from here,'” the actress said of her mom. “She’s doing a lot of gigs lately so I am really, really proud of her.”
