Some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment attended the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards virtually Thursday. The event, which was simultaneously live streamed on GLAAD’s Facebook and YouTube pages, was co-hosted by comedians Gina Yashere and Fortune Feimster.
Chloe and Halle performed their hit “Do It,” turning the hit song into a tribute to the Spice Girls. The duo dressed up as Posh and Baby Spice. They received spectacular socially-distanced back-up from RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Mayhem Miller and Naomi Smalls as Ginger, Baby, and Sporty.
Shea Diamond then gave a soulful performance of “I Am America,” declaring that she would continue to love America even when they “get offended” at the beauty of her truth.
She was introduced by Demi Levato who told viewers, “Don’t let anyone, especially our government fool you into thinking you are anything less than perfect and meant to be. Be proud of who you are, keep your voices loud and strong, and know that we’re out here fighting for you.”
Lil Nas X took home the award for Outstanding Music Artist. The “Old Town Road” rapper is infamous for his unbothered antics on Twitter, where he routinely takes down trolls who attack his sexuality.
The cast and producers of Pose were presented with the award for Outstanding Drama Series by Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union. This is the second consecutive year the series has received this award.
“We stand as allies with the LGBTQ+ community as proud parents of a transgender child,” said Wade, who fathers a 13-year-old trans daughter Zaya, during the presentation.
“Our daughter Zaya is leading us in our journey, and we’re doing all we can to give every one of our kids the ability to live their truth. I didn’t always understand how to do that – but I thank Zaya for teaching me and GLAAD for elevating the images and messages that accelerate acceptance in every family,” he continued.
Actresses such as Lena Waithe, Kandi Burruss, Angelica Ross, Jonica T. Gibbs, along with trans activist Raquel Willis also appeared.
The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards will air on LOGO on Monday at 8 p.m. ET.
